We provide trainings for abortion providers and those operating within the healthcare system and adjacent services.
These are open to people from all backgrounds who have a desire to provide affirming care for Muslims in their communities. If you are curious about the ways in which Islamophobia shows up in your workplace and in the care you provide, then our trainings are the perfect place to unpack this.
We also provide trainings or workshops for Muslims who want to improve the way their communities talk about abortion, and thus support those who want/need abortion care. These sessions are an opportunity to talk about what pregnancy endings mean to us, as Muslims, and how we can gently call in community members and challenge the stigma that persists around us.
We seek to provide spaces for people to learn and un-learn what they know about Islam, justice and pregnancy endings. By modelling ways to centre the needs and Divine right to autonomy that we all have, our trainings provide tangible examples of how to navigate complex situations, respond to tricky questions, and centre the needs of the most marginalised in your work.
Our workshop prices range from £300 for a 1 hour session to £1500 for a full day. We operate on a sliding scale and are happy to discuss ways in which we can make our trainings more accessible to you.
Please note that our trainings are not an attempt at an EDI/DEI/diversity and inclusion trainings that seek to co-opt the language of anti-racism into liberal terminology. Our trainings are an invitation to expand your thinking and renew your commitment to anti-oppression. They provide insight into the experiences of Muslims but do not offer a single ‘Muslim perspective.’
Abortion is Halal - Challenging Abortion Stigma Through Dua and Community
A 1.5-hour workshop covering abortion methods, a brief Islamic history of abortion, and how to better support Muslim abortion seekers.
This training will discuss:
Historic Foundations of Abortion in Islam
Abortion Methods and Practices in Muslim Communities Across the World
Integrating Islamic History and Values into Abortion Support Work
Islam & Abortion
This session provides an in-depth exploration of the physical and emotional aspects of abortion and Islam. We will deep dive into Quranic references of abortion and bodily autonomy. We all also examine various interpretations of the Quran regarding abortion and what different sects and different schools of thought say about abortion.
The session will address the role of sin, grief, and emotions in abortion experiences. It will also challenge the preconceptions made about religious people’s views and how many of these preconceptions find their roots in white, evangelical patriarchy, not Islam. It will also explore the role of Islamophobia and gendered racism in healthcare, with particular attention to obstetric violence and its origins.
We hope participants leave this session with a better understanding of what the Quran says about abortion and what some of the common opinions are on abortion within Muslim communities. In addition to this, we hope participants feel more confident in talking about Islam and abortion and asking their Muslim patients what they need for affirming and embodied abortion experience.
Supporting Muslim Patients - resisting structural Islamophobia
This workshop is designed to help abortion providers better understand and support the needs of Muslim patients. Participants will explore the intersections of identity and reproductive decision making, with particular attention to religion and race. We will explore the common questions that providers are asked around sin, punishment and shame.
Through open discussions, real-life scenarios and case studies, we will also explore the harm caused by structural and interpersonal islamophobia. Participants will be gently encouraged to reflect on how oppression shows up in their work and their practice so that they meaningfully work towards a more inclusive and compassionate model of care.
